Welcome to Redfern
Gateway to Waterloo
Screenprint on cartridge paper. April, 2001
I lived in Redfern for about four years.
Regent Street, where I lived, is pursuing the title of ugliest street in Sydney with a vigour that is breathtaking to behold.
The rest of Redfern isn't much better.
And then, "within easy walking distance", lies Waterloo.
Waterloo is the local Sydney quarry for "shameful statistics".
Without Waterloo, phrases like; "the most"; "the highest"; the worst"; or "the poorest" would slip from journalistic usage.
Yet, the fact remains, I like Redfern and Waterloo.
When the Angel of Poverty eventually encouraged me to save money by moving back home to live with my parents, I realised that I would need a studio.
I asked around and, in no time at all, a Waterloo local offered me an empty shop to use. It's the sort of thing people will do to help someone out.
I still like hanging around Redfern and Waterloo.
It's not the prettiest place in Sydney, but it has a kind heart and a genuine sense of community.
